Creative Bloggers' Party & Hop 01.29.12

Hello there, my fabulous friends! Welcome to our 44th edition of Creative Bloggers' Party & Hop. I'm so happy you're here :)

I'm blessed to be surrounded with phenomenal blogging friends, one among them is Linda from It All Started With Paint.

She shared with me about something she had cooked up with other amazing newbie bloggers. It's the "Imagine the Impossibilities" challenge that will culminate on January 31st in a multi-blog link party. Mark your calendars, friends, it's on January 31st.

According to Linda, it's all about tackling that challenge that has been holding you back. It could be anything ... diy ... cooking ... learning a new language ... losing that annoying last 5 pounds ... running that marathon that you keep saying you will ... you get the gist ... Yes, Linda, I'll be there and I encourage you, too, my friends, to join her blog party :)

This week went by so fast! I also feel like Princess One is growing up way too fast, and she's just 10. Whenever I take her to school, she asks questions on how to turn on the seat's heater, or the wipers of the car, or how to de-fog the windshield, or how to turn on the signal lights. So I showed them all to her. This Thursday, the questions she popped that really set my system's alarm off were, "How do I turn on the car, Mommy? Can I do it?" OH, MY GOODNESS! A few years ago, she was just an infant that we brought home from the hospital sitting on the infant's carseat at the back. Now she sits in front on the passenger side. I still have 5 years to prepare before I let go of the wheel and let her control it. My baby now wants to turn on the car...by herself. I don't know if that's cool or what. In 5 years, I might be ready, or maybe not.

Blog Tip
Did you get the memo that picnik is closing on April 19th? Bummer! The good news is Susan from Between Naps on the Porch explained that there are other 11 free photo-editing sites that are good alternatives to picnik. Go ahead and see which one will work for you.

Favorite Blog
You clicked, inlinkz tallied. The readers' favorite blog post this past week, being the most viewed post, is Desire Empire's article on how she Lost 10 Kilos Since September. I love the practical ideas that worked for her to lose weight.

Burning question: What is your favorite HGTV design and decorating show? Me, I'm an avid watcher of Design on a Dime. I've been watching it long before I decided to have my own blog. That's how I got inspired to have the name Homemaker On A Dime. How about you? Do you watch HGTV design and decorating shows?

Bookcase - Stained and Stenciled

Hi, there! It's me, SJ. This is my attempt to show my portrait for Darcy's P52 blog party. Well, I can't just show myself posing in front of a camera so I thought, why not share how I stained and stenciled our old bookcase?

Photobucket

My husband is known to keep things like forever. This bookcase is one among the things that he has been keeping before we got married. It was so old and faded. Consider these as the before pictures.

Photobucket

I stained it using Minwax Wood Finish.

Photobucket

I was about to apply polyurethane when I decided that since it looked too boring, I can experiment by stenciling it.

Photobucket

Next came the process of applying polyurethane.

Photobucket

The stenciled design really stands out on the dark stain and (in a sing-song way) I LOVE IT!

Photobucket

Then hubby started sneezing. His allergies kicked in.

Photobucket

We had to carry this back in the garage. My excitement to put our books back in the bookcase and some other trinkets was shortlived :(

Photobucket

I have a feeling that we might have a visit to Ikea soon to get us some Expedit shelves. Oh well, some projects succeed, some don't. That's the nature of the DIY niche.

Photobucket

How about you? Any projects that you thought will succeed but had to be shelved?

Telephone Bench DIY Re-do - Guest Post by Stacey

So excited to be guest posting today for Homemaker On A Dime! Thank you SJ for this great opportunity! This is my very first guest post ever! A brief introduction of myself: My name is Stacey and I blog at Embracing Change.

I am a gal who has her hands in lots of things - I am a pastor's wife, day care center director, Mother to two beautiful girls named Emma and Ana! My blog is Embracing Change and I would love for you to stop by! My most recent endeavor is beginning a business with my friend Megan called The Blessed Nest. We create and recreate furniture and home decor. I am a gal who never has enough time to do what I am passionate about which is recreating furniture! Please do come by and say HI! I would love to meet you!

I had been searching for a telephone bench for a long while and just wasn't having any luck at all.  Then while visiting family in York over the Thanksgiving holiday, I stumbled upon this:

SWEET! Thank you Craigslist, my faithful friend. I was really excited to find it despite being 3 hours from home. And the price was right at less than $20 bucks.

So...with a car full of luggage, Christmas gifts and two kiddos, what is a gal to do? That's right - bungee it to the roof rack. A short three hour trip later and we were home! You just never know what you will find. (Moral: Always come prepared for finds with a tape measure and bungee cords.)

My husband Chris gave me only a little bit of grief over the matter as he muttered something about always having to pick up something wherever we go. True enough. I wanted to find the right fabric for the piece.

Isn't it purdy? The bench was in great shape. I didn't even need to tighten a screw. First I took off the seat. Then I painted the bench with four coats of a semi-gloss paint leftover from a home project. I am all about using what you have. Reuse, repurpose and recycle is my M.O.

The the fun part...attaching the fabric to the pad.  I have an odd fascination with a staple guns.  I love them but, but I am always afraid
I will shoot myself in the eye. I popped off the seat which was in fine shape and took the 3/4 yard fabric I purchased and stapled that baby on. Wrapped it up like a Christmas present and secured it with a few staples. Easy peasy.

Then I reattached the seat to the painted bench.

She was lovely, but needed just a little something else... how about a little stencil?

Oh yeah. That is just what she needed! And if you haven't read my blog before, you may find it interesting to learn that I name every piece of furniture I redo. I feel every piece has a personality and I embrace that! Meet Vintage Veronica! She's a real pip!

Hope you love her as much as I do! Thank you for coming by!
I would love if you would become a follower! And thank you SJ for allowing me to come by your awesome blog!

It's my pleasure, Stacey! Your lovely re-do is such a creative inspiration. Friends, check out Stacey's blog at Embracing Change.

Creative Bloggers' Party & Hop 01.22.12

Happy Sunday, my friends! Another week to show off what we've created. THANK YOU for being here :)

I'm happy to announce that my bloggy friends Vanessa and Heather, the ladies behind At The Picket Fence, have a new series called Proving Pinterest.

The essence of this series is to prove if all of those amazing tips, tricks and ideas that are pinned on Pinterest really work or are worth trying. I enjoyed their videos so far and it's great to take a peek of their respective homes :)

On another topic, I just have a quick question for you mothers out there. Did your children sleep with you and your husband for more than 3 years since they were born? I asked this because Princess Two still sleeps with us (alright, mock me. Princess One slept with us til she was 5) and for the very first time last weekend, hubby and I got to sleep by ourselves. Princess One lured her to have a sleepover in her bedroom. It was both a relief and at the same time, a weird feeling because "Oh, my goodness, I felt like an empty-nester already." Then she had to sleep back in our bedroom because it was a school night the next day. How about you? Please do share.

Blog Tip
What the heck is Google+? Colleen from the Mural Maker has a series about this new google feature. This came about because google is already retiring Google Friend Connect for all non-Blogger sites effective March 1st.

Blogging For Dollars Series - Guest Post by Taylor from MaryJanes & Galoshes

Taylor, the blogger behind MaryJanes & Galoshes, has great ideas that will astound you (I was really impressed with her responses in #3). I'm sure you've heard of True Value's DIY Blog Squad, and she being a part of that elite DIY group really showed how seasoned she is as blogger and that every idea she shared is worth reading. Friends, let's welcome Taylor!

1) share how you started earning income from your blog?

When I first started MaryJanes and Galoshes I had no intention of making a profit from it. It was an outlet and great therapy for me as a mom of three kids under 3. It was my way to focus on something and give myself a grown up outlet. It kept me crafting when I felt to tired or busy to do ANYTHING. After a while I started to get inquiries and decided to offer sponsor spots. The fist income that I earned from my blog was through sponsor ads on my sidebar. Your all familiar with these ads, but you won't find them on my sidebar anymore. Although I love to work with small business owners, I found that keeping track of the ads was a lot of work (I let them start whenever they liked rather than the 1st of the month) and I HATED feeling like a sales person or bill collector when it came time to renew. I also didn't want to push the spots. I tried taking an impulse self-serve approach by putting up an ad page with all the sponsorship info and a buy now button. Some people took advantage, but it still was less organized and more work than I wanted. So I ended this type of sponsorship after the first year.

I then put up the google ads that are available right through the blogger account. I was amazed. Not only did I not have to do any work, but I had built up so much traffic for my blog that I was making way more off of than I ever had off of traditional sponsorship. In addition I started to allow text links on past posts with a one time fee (which is usually done through an agent of the company interested in placing the link). I have no idea how you would go about contacting THEM, they seem to find me.

My biggest reward (for me) has been doing product reviews. Although I find it to be a TON of work, I really enjoy being able to get things that I would normally buy in exchange for posting about them for readers.

2) Can you give advice on how bloggers can attract advertisers without turning off readers at the same time?

There is always going to be SOMEONE who is turned off by what you choose to do. As long as you provide quality content in addition to your ads or paid posts, they will continue to come to your site. Mostly, I just stay true to myself. If there is a sponsor who wants me to review a product that I don't have any interest in, or wants to pay me to write about something completely unrelated to my demographic and that I'm not genuinely interested in.... I have to say no. Respect your readers, they are the reason you have a site worth an income, but respect yourself and the time you invest in building and maintaining your site as well.

3) Can you please tip bloggers on how to balance family life and blogging?

When I started MJ&G my kids were 3 and 2 (2-year old twins) so I had my hands FULL! Blogging (or at least a successful, profitable blog) takes a lot of time. Building a successful blog is a full time job in itself. For me, being a craft blogger, I found that it was easiest for me to involve the kids in what I was doing. I would set them up with a craft of their own, or involve them in mine when possible. I don't bake often, but when I do, they get to help. I also spent many hours after they went to bed writing and setting up posts!

In 2011 I started my photography business and have found my blog falling behind a bit. One rule I have always held myself to is not apologizing for an absence. I have never once started a post with "it's been 2 weeks since I posted" or "I didn't mean to take that break" or "sorry I haven't been around". I hate reading those posts and to be honest, generally people follow so many blogs... they don't really notice you haven't blogged in a week (or at least I don't!). So don't beat yourself up. Keep the whines and pitty off your blog and move forward with life. Your blog needs to be an enjoyable place, not a cause of additional stress.

Thanks to the Homemaker On a Dime for having me!!!!!

Taylor, thank you for your fresh perspective about making money off your blog! We surely benefitted from this post.

Simple Ways to Add Style Throughout The House Without Breaking the Bank

Hello, friends! We are privileged today with a guest post from Daniel P. If you want to have a stylish home with just a fraction of the cost, he offers simple ways that can give big impact to the look of your home. Take it away, Daniel!
Your home might be your castle, but decorating it shouldn't carry a king-sized price tag. Whether you are entertaining guests or enjoying a quiet evening at home, your house offers the perfect opportunity to express your creative side and show off your distinctive personality. Do your home and your wallet a favor by looking for inexpensive ways to add color, style, unique accents and functional organization to every room of the house, from the bathroom to the foyer.

Don't Run Into a Wall
Blank, unused wall space can make your home look unfinished and underwhelming. Finding a distinctive way to decorate your walls is an economical solution when it comes to space and, with the right eye for bargains, should not break the bank. Look for ways to add upscale style to inexpensive pieces. If you find movie posters or cheap prints of artwork, bring them to the next level by using simple picture or poster frames. Use reasonably priced movie posters or reproductions of artwork with attractive and simple poster or photo frames. Even a basic black frame can transform a favorite college dorm poster into a sophisticated and decorative focal point. For an eclectic and yet inexpensive decorating idea, look for eye-catching picture frames at thrift stores or antique shops. Use interesting pictures from magazines, favorite family photos or wrapping paper and fabric with attractive patterns. Arrange the finished frames on your walls in interesting shapes. For instance, instead of a linear arrangement, try a circle of photos or a checkerboard pattern across one wall.

Photobucket

Color Theory
Sometimes, all it takes to transform a room entirely is a new coat of paint. For the price of a few cans of paint, drop cloths and some rollers, you are investing in a more attractive future for your home. In addition to making sure you buy a relatively durable paint, consider color. A drab or ordinary white room can become a contemporary conversation piece with a new coat of robin's egg blue, deep peach or lavender. Remember that choosing lighter shades is an excellent way to create an illusion of space and openness. If you have a cramped room without sufficient natural light, glossy white or bright, pastel blue can create airiness and open up an otherwise small space. Paint can also transform your furniture. It can be expensive to go out and buy matching furniture, so make your own. For instance, purchase a chair and desk with cute silhouettes from a thrift or resale store and paint them with glossy black or white paint for instant chic at a low cost.

Photobucket

Accents and Finishing Touches
Clutter is one of the worst enemies of a stylish home. It does not cost much to take the time and organize your belongings, and it also makes it easier to find your items. Invest in a cute, simple magazine rack or umbrella stand to hold your loose belongings. Mail can pile up quickly and collect across your furniture, so use a cutely patterned box to hold all your stray envelopes or bills. A centerpiece on the coffee table adds some elegance to your living room, and a centerpiece on the kitchen table or dining table does the same for other rooms of the house. Buy some bright oranges, lemons and limes at the grocery store and arrange them in a simple wooden or glass bowl for edible elegance. Finally, a little green will complement any color scheme and bring a relaxing, natural vibe to your home. Look for plants that are hardy and simple to tend and remember to water them frequently, keeping your home green and fresh. Paint your flower pots to match your color scheme and decorating theme, drawing your whole look together inexpensively and providing a stylish home.
